Deepika Padukone has always been open about her struggles with mental health, and she also runs the Live Love Laugh Foundation, which aims to help those in need. Deepika revealed her mental illness in 2015, revealing that she had struggled with depression for a year prior and sought help. Deepika, who is currently in Tamil Nadu for a mental health programme, recently spoke about her battle with mental illness once more.
Deepika described the role of family as “extremely important” in this journey, saying, “Even in my personal journey, the role of the caregiver has been extremely important.” That’s why my mother is here, and why my sister has been so dedicated to this cause for so long. The actress also emphasised the importance of caregivers receiving mental health care. She stated that if her mother had not recognised her symptoms, she does not know where she would be in life.
“In my own case, for example, had my mother and the caregiver not identified my symptoms, in my moment of vulnerability, had she not had the presence of mind to tell me to or help me reach out to the professionals, I don’t know what state I would be in today. Ensuring, I was regular with my treatment, with my consultations with the doctors, and of course it takes a toll on the caregiver as well and that's not something new. I think caregivers in general, whether it is mental illness or any other form of illness, it takes a toll on the caregiver," Deepika mentioned, in an interview with NDTV.
