Ponniyin Selvan: I is a forthcoming Indian Tamil-language epic period action film directed by Mani Ratnam and co-written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It is the first of two films based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan, produced by Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran through Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Ponniyin Selvan’s story is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s fiction novel of the same name. The story follows Rajaraja Chola I of the Chola dynasty.

The first look at Prakash Raj as Sundara Chozhar, Jayachitra as Sembiyan Maadevi, and Rahman as Madhurantakan from the historical drama was released today by the makers of the film.

While they are all dressed historically, they all have one thing in common: a determination that can be seen in their eyes.

Producers Lyca Productions wrote on Twitter after posting the short clip,"Every rose has its thorns. The Emperor, the Queen Mother, and the Son who wants it all! Meet @prakashraa as Sundara Chozhar, Jayachitra as Sembiyan Maadevi and @actorrahman as Madhurantakan! 2 days to go for the Grand audio and trailer launch of #PS1!! #PonniyinSelvan."

In the video shared by the makers they reveal the launch of Grand audio and Trailer launch on 6th September, 2022 at Nehru Indoor Stadium Chennai. The event is expected to be attended by all of the film's major stars, including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

Ponniyin Selvan was intended to be a standalone film, but it was later divided into two parts. The first part, PS-I, is set for a worldwide theatrical release on September 30, 2022, in both standard and IMAX formats.
