City of Gold - the story of the long-forgotten masses (cotton mill workers) not only examines the apathy of these mill workers through the story of one such family, but it is also a no-holds-barred account of the emergence of Mumbai's true underbelly of organised crime. The film follows the rise of greed politics in Mumbai, exposing the unholy alliance between the triumvirate of big business, the political elite, and the trade union leaders who were ostensibly tasked with defending the mill workers' interests. The entire landscape of Central Mumbai was forever altered in the two decades that followed.
