Peepli Live (2010)

Anusha Rizvi, a debut director, tackles the topic of farmer suicides, which has troubled the country for years. Natha and Budhia, who are about to lose their estate, seek assistance from a local politician. Instead, he suggests that it will be better for them to commit suicide in order to profit from a government programme that aids the families of deceased farmers. Natha considers his options and is ready to commit suicide when the media arrives at his door for a scoop, fuelled by this thinking. Local leaders, not to be outdone, hop on the bandwagon on the eve of elections and attempt to sway the electorate in their favour.
