Pandit Lal, a devout and staunch Kanyakubh Hindu Brahman from Bihar, is the only son of Kishen Lal. Kishen has moved away from his parents' home and is studying medicine in a hostel. He meets Christian Reena Brown here, and the two fall in love. When Reena's ex, John Clayton, married Emily and relocated to London, she had a heartbreak. Kishen is introduced to Reena's father, James, who approves, and the couple soon begins planning their wedding through the Registrar of Marriages. When Pandit learns of it, he becomes enraged and pays a visit to Reena and her father. He warns Reena that if the marriage goes through, he will never be able to marry his unmarried daughter, nor will he be able to welcome her and Kishen home. Pandit and James get into an argument, and they both decide not to agree to the marriage. Reena also decides against getting married. Kishen, broken-hearted despite his success as a doctor, leaves the hostel and relocates to Madhupur, a peaceful town where Hindus attend Church and Christians openly worship Hindu Gods. Years later, Reena reappears in his life, and it is here that he discovers the truth about why John dumped her, as well as the mystery that James had kept hidden from her for so long.
