Shor in the City (2011)

1h 52mins| Crime, Drama | 29th April 2011

Is it possible to hear yourself when the noise is too loud? That is the underlying theme of this gritty, grounded film, which revolves around three loosely linked stories set in the midst of Mumbai's noise and grime during the Ganpati festival. Abhay, an outsider, is forced to accept that he is alone in an unwelcoming city that he felt was his home. He soon learns that he is not unlike the thousands who mill around the neighbourhood, living in a comfortable shell. Tilak, an innocent bootlegger who pulls con jobs with his rowdy pals, stumbles across a rare stash on a local train, which opens up new, risky doors for them. He is drawn into the unlikely adventure of locating an empty location in the overcrowded city where a bomb can be detonated. Just for fun! Sawan, a young cricketer from Mumbai, has only one target and, more importantly, one option: to make the Mumbai Junior Cricket team. In a city where corruption is the norm, the target comes at a cost: he must first find the money. When the characters come to terms with the noise - both within and outside - it becomes clear that in this area, which operates under its own set of rules, there is no need for an excuse to be good or bad; particularly bad!
